Columbus hurricane guide

Columbus is the county seat of Polk County, in the foothills far from the coast. The remains of hurricanes can bring floods, falling trees, washed out roads, and long power outages. The town has its own police department and runs its own water and sewer systems.

Power, water and debris

  • Water and sewer (after hours): For urgent water leaks and sewer repairs after hours, on weekends, and on holidays. Emergencies only. Do not call 911 for these. Phone: 828-899-0685. Website.
  • Storm debris collection: Town crews pick up limbs and yard debris from the roadside on Fridays. Limbs must be no longer than six feet. Large trees, stumps, and contractor debris go to the town's land clearing debris site. Watch town advisories for storm cleanup instructions. Website.
