Nassau County hurricane guide

The Nassau County Office of Emergency Management, in Bethpage, plans for hurricanes and coastal flooding. The county uses four numbered evacuation zones and four evacuation routes (A to D) from the South Shore. The county says the Red Cross opens hurricane shelters only when volunteers and supplies are in place, so you may be told to bypass the shelter in your community and go to one that is open. Listen to the media and follow the instructions so you do not go to a shelter that is not open.

Evacuation zones

Nassau County has four hurricane evacuation zones, numbered 1 to 4, shown on the county's evacuation zone and route map. Open the map and enter your address to find your zone. If an evacuation is ordered, the county gives four routes from the South Shore. Route A starts at the Atlantic Beach Bridge and goes north on the Nassau Expressway (Route 878). Route B starts at the Long Beach Bridge and goes north on Austin Boulevard and Long Beach Road. Route C starts at Lido Boulevard, then uses the Loop Parkway and the Meadowbrook Parkway north. Route D starts at Merrick Road and goes north on the Seaford Oyster Bay Expressway (Route 135). Follow posted signs along each route. The county's route page ends Routes A to C at the Nassau Community College Red Cross Evacuation Center and Route D at the SUNY Farmingdale Red Cross Evacuation Center, but listen for which center is open.

Evacuation centers

Open only when announced

Evacuation centers open only when officials announce them, and not every center opens for every storm. Check the official list of open centers before you leave home. Bring your own bedding, food, water, and medicines.

Nassau County works with the American Red Cross to pre-position shelter supplies at select locations that would serve as hurricane shelters. The Red Cross opens a hurricane shelter only when volunteers are available and essential supplies are in place, so you may be told to bypass the shelter in your community and go to one that is open in another community. Do not go to a site until it is announced as open. Listen to the messages the county gives to the media and follow the instructions.
