Greene County hurricane guide

Greene County Emergency Management, based in Greensboro, takes an all-hazards approach to disasters, including preparedness, response, and recovery. The county offers a Mass Alert System for emergencies and inclement weather. If a disaster overwhelms local responders, the agency may ask the Governor for a state of emergency so state resources can be sent.

  • Greene County Mass Alert System: Sign up for emergency and inclement weather alerts. A separate non-emergency signup covers elections, trash pickup, and building closures. Website.

Evacuation centers

Open only when announced

Evacuation centers open only when officials announce them, and not every center opens for every storm. Check the official list of open centers before you leave home. Bring your own bedding, food, water, and medicines.

Greene County does not publish a list of designated shelters or a shelter page on the pages checked. If an evacuation or shelter is announced, the county says it will use its emergency alerts, so sign up for them and check the county website. Do not travel to a site until it is announced as open.

Cities and towns

Each city has its own services and some have their own alerts. The county's evacuation zones, evacuation centers, and emergency alerts cover everyone, in every city and in unincorporated areas.
