Cherokee County hurricane guide

The Cherokee County Emergency Management Agency runs the county Emergency Operations Center in Canton and plans for all hazards. The county says that although it is far from the coast, tropical storms and hurricanes have caused great damage there, and that inland flooding is the main danger. Residents sign up for alerts through Rave. The county has 58 outdoor warning siren sites that do not cover the whole county.

Evacuation centers

Open only when announced

Evacuation centers open only when officials announce them, and not every center opens for every storm. Check the official list of open centers before you leave home. Bring your own bedding, food, water, and medicines.

Cherokee County's EMA site says local officials issue evacuation orders and that you should leave immediately if asked. It tells residents to plan several routes and to take pets along, and says pets are not permitted in public shelters, so plan a friend's or relative's home or a pet-friendly hotel. The site does not publish a shelter list. Check county alerts to find out whether any site is open.
